I have thirty years of continuous experience in teaching music, specifically starting with percussion instruments like Tombak and frame drum (Dayereh).
My main focus in teaching is primarily on developing the necessary skills for understanding rhythms by analyzing, comprehending their complexities, and accurately performing rhythmic patterns using percussion instruments in accompanying metric compositions, here specifically referring to Iranian musical pieces and related music from the same family. We will patiently progress step by step through this course, which is delivered orally (heart to heart), until the student's proficiency in this area is firmly established before moving on to the next section, which is technique and virtuosity.
In the first session of my teaching method, beginner students will learn two fundamental movements of their percussion instrument and apply them to play a simple rhythm in a fixed initial form. However, my first lesson is not limited to this: they also learn a traditional Iranian song, which we call ”Tasnif" in Persian. During the following week, you as a student must practice and prepare this song for the next session, singing it while simultaneously playing its rhythm on your Tombak or Dayereh. You learn and perform it musically, regardless of knowing the Persian language.
Certainly, it is evident that playing rhythms at the beginning of the journey is: basic, simple, and without ornamentation and development, and Also we begin with simple songs from the repertoire of Iranian music. As you progress and your technical proficiency and rhythmic comprehension grow, We move on to even more magnificent and well-founded songs.
For beginner students, within a period of one to two years, a comprehensive collection of more than a hundred of the finest Iranian music songs will be covered in this course. Advanced students can progress through this course more quickly, depending on their dedication and abilities. By the end of this course, participants will not only be able to perform all the songs correctly but also comprehend them theoretically. This knowledge will enrich the rhythmic - metric foundations of them, whether as a percussionist, a melody instrument player, singer or a composer in this music.
Now, the students in my class can easily recognize the meter (rhythm) of any Iranian or related music pieces like Arabic, Turkish, and Middle Asian music and accompany them with their Tombak or Dayereh, even in live concerts. From now on, it's just you and the pure art of Percussion playing, entering the second stage of my teaching method.
